Throughout my practice I use colour, composition and collaged materials. Paintings evolve gradually within a series of three to five abstract works created simultaneously. I work thematically, weaving concepts through my work which are drawn from an enduring liking for the mundane: urban details, hand rails, roof lines, steps, railings, clutter of sheds. I am drawn to the inter-relationship of lines, shapes and patterns and the push and pull of positive and negative space. Mid-century architecture runs as a quiet but persistent thread throughout.
My work is a delicate balance of selection and discernment. The process is disciplined yet responsive – a call and respond approach during which questions surface through mark-making, layering, editing and stripping back. Risk and chance are not accidents but necessities. Lengthy conversations unfold between the emerging surface of the painting and my intuition, each work shaped by accumulated experience as much as instinct. My visual language sits somewhere within the parameters of value contrast, design, perspective and composition – a territory I continue to navigate, refine and inhabit.
